Everex is showing off its next generation Cloudbook at CTIA. On paper, this thing looks sweet. It has a higher resolution screen, a faster processor, and it doesn't have that big ole gap between the keyboard and screen that the original Cloudbook has. And heck, it even has a real touchpad.

Here are the specs:

  • 1.6GHz VIA processor
  • 80GB HDD
  • 2GB RAM
  • 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel screen
  • Windows Vista
  • 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, and an integrated GPS receiver
  • 2 megapixel webcam
  • 4 hour battery
  • S-Video output
  • WiMAX support
Something tells me this puppy's going to sell for a few bucks more than the original $399 Cloudbook when it's released next year.

As expected, Asus had a few things to say about the future of the Eee PC platform during the company's presentation at CES today. And as expected, WiMax is the word. Wait, is that actually a word? Anyway, Asus is playing up WiMax integration with the Eee PC and other mobile devices.

But if you ask me, the most exciting news is that Asus will launch two new models of the Eee PC during the second quarter of 2008. One will have an 8.9 inch screen, which goes along with what we'd been expecting. And there will also be a model with an 8 inch screen, which comes as a complete surprise. Each model will be WiMax ready and some or all will sport higher resolution screens with 1024 x 600 pixel displays. You know, just enough to make the early adopters really really jealous.

I kind of hope the new models cost $500+ because otherwise I'm going to be sorely tempted to pick one up.

Asus plans to show off its next generation Eee PC at CES during a presentation on January 7th. That's pretty much all we know at the moment. No real word on whether the new machine will sport a larger screen, higher res display, more memory, or anything else. But since the events is cosponsored by Asus and Sprint to show off WiMAX wireless technology, we can also assume that the new devices will either include a WiMAX adapter or will be designed to work with optional WiMAX components.

Some sites are also reporting that the next generation Eee PC will sport a 8.9 inch display instead of the current 7 inch model. But Asus has not officially confirmed this. And it's not clear whether a device with a larger screen will need a larger case and keyboard, or whether Asus will just move the speakers and webcam and make a screen that takes up the whole size of the computer lid.
